Newly released details are providing clarity in the death of University of Alabama student Jimmy Gracey, whose disappearance in Barcelona drew widespread attention earlier this month.
According to Spanish newspaper El País, citing police sources, surveillance footage shows Gracey walking alone toward the dock area near Port Olímpic in the early morning hours of March 17 before falling into the water, with no indication of involvement from other individuals.
Authorities have since determined that Gracey’s death was accidental. U.S. television reports have also cited officials saying “all signs point” to the incident being an accident.
The update marks a significant shift from the early stages of the investigation, when Gracey’s disappearance raised concerns about possible foul play after he was last seen outside the Shôko nightclub.
Gracey, a 20-year-old junior and member of Theta Chi fraternity, was visiting Barcelona during spring break when he went missing after becoming separated from friends.
Search efforts in the days that followed led to the discovery of his body in the water near Somorrostro Beach, not far from where he was last seen.
An autopsy has since ruled out signs of criminal activity and determined that Gracey died by drowning.
Additional details released during the investigation indicate Gracey’s phone was recovered after a suspected pickpocket claimed to have found it in the area. Authorities do not believe the phone is connected to the circumstances of his fall.
The University of Alabama previously said the campus community was “heartbroken” over Gracey’s death, while his fraternity and family also shared tributes honoring his life.
Gracey, originally from the Chicago area, had been expected to return home just days after the accident.
