The search for William R. “Bill” North, an assistant district attorney in Jefferson County’s Bessemer Division, ended Monday after authorities recovered his body from Logan Martin Lake.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said North fell into the water while assisting with a sailboat race Sunday.
ALEA said North’s body was recovered at approximately 11:12 a.m. Monday near the same location where he entered the water on the southern portion of Logan Martin Lake in St. Clair County.
Authorities said North fell into the water about 3 p.m. Sunday while serving as a spotter for the Pell City Sail Club during an ongoing sailboat race. He was attempting to transition from a sailboat to an unoccupied jon boat when he went below the surface and did not come back up.
The incident happened near the Pell City Sail Club on the southern portion of Logan Martin Lake.
ALEA thanked the Pell City Police Department, Pell City Fire Department, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln Special Operations Unit, New London Fire Department, Childersburg Rescue Squad, Munford Rescue Squad, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander City Rescue Squad and ALEA’s Aviation Unit for assisting with the search and recovery effort.
ALEA Marine Patrol Troopers continue to investigate the incident. The agency said no additional information was immediately available.
