ALGOP chair ‘confident’ GOP will retain legislative majority in Madison County

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl is “confident” in the GOP’s ability to maintain a majority of legislative seats in Madison County.

In light of redistricting and growth in the Huntsville area, Democrats are growing increasingly optimistic that the party can take legislative seats away from Republicans.

The Huntsville area races seen as highly competitive are:

  • Senate District 2: State Sen. Tom Butler (R-Madison) vs. Kim Lewis (D)
  • House District 10: Dr. David Cole (R) vs. Marilyn Lands (D)
  • House District 24: Phillip Rigsby (R) vs. Mallory Hagan (D)

In an interview with Yellowhammer News, Wahl said the GOP will “learn a lot” about its standing in the area after tonight’s election results.

“It’s hard to know exactly what is going on the first election after redistricting. We’re going to learn a lot tonight,” said Wahl. “I am confident the Republican party worked hard to hold those seats, and I’m confident we’ll hold a majority of seats in Madison County.

“We’re so thankful to the many volunteers across the state of Alabama who have supported the Republican Party and the voters that have gotten out and voted. We’re looking forward to a good night for Republicans across the state.”

Regarding ALGOP’s out-of-state efforts this election cycle, Wahl highlighted its “Restore America” campaign. Alabama’s majority party deployed volunteers to Georgia to support the senatorial bid of GOP nominee Herschel Walker, who is looking to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).

“I just got numbers from our Alabama volunteers over in Georgia — they hit 20,000 doors for Walker last week alone,” Wahl told Yellowhammer News. “We’re pretty proud of it. We’re proud of Alabama making a difference to take back the country, to help restore America and take back the House and Senate.”

The 2022 midterm elections are “a referendum on our country,” according to the ALGOP chairman.

“The Republican Party is fighting for our country, fighting for our traditional values, and their fighting for our rights and freedoms.”
