Alabama’s Rodney Smith given car by Ford for ‘selflessness’ on latest 50-state lawn mowing tour serving veterans

Alabama’s Rodney Smith, Jr. is once again receiving national recognition for his tireless work serving those in need across America.

Smith is the founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service, which helps elderly citizens, single mothers and underserved communities. He founded the free-of-charge service — with its motto of “Making a difference one lawn at a time” — in Huntsville, where he lives.

The Rocket City resident has previously drawn plaudits for separate 50-state tours serving law enforcement members and veterans, respectively.

On Tuesday, Smith found himself in Michigan amid another 50-state lawn mowing tour for veterans when he received a special surprise.

Ford Motor Company employees came out to the house at which Smith was scheduled to mow the lawn and helped him with the yard work. Afterwards, Ford presented Smith with a brand new 2020 Ford Edge, as Smith shared on social media. The car will be transported back to Huntsville for him, awaiting his return from the latest tour.

Smith explained that his current vehicle has more than 333, 327 miles on it. He plans to get that car new tires, as well as getting it detailed, tuned up and inspected, when he returns to Alabama. Smith added that he plans on donating his current car to a family in need. “Pay it forward!” he wrote.

In an interview last year, Smith stressed his dedication comes from his faith. For him, his volunteer service is fulfilling divine purpose.

“I remember asking God to use me as his vessel,” Smith said. “My true purpose in life is helping people.”
