University of Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith on Tuesday evening was named the winner of the Heisman Trophy for the 2020 season.
Smith becomes the first receiver since 1991 to win college football’s preeminent annual honor. He is now Bama’s third-ever winner of the award, after Mark Ingram in 2009 and Derrick Henry in 2015.
Due to COVID-19, this year’s ceremony was held virtually on ESPN.
Smith was one of four finalists, along with his teammate and quarterback Mac Jones.
Florida QB Kyle Trask and Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence rounded out the group.
Alabama’s Najee Harris finished fifth in the award voting.
Smith on Tuesday was also named the winner of the Paul Hornung Award, which is given to college football’s most versatile player. He has taken on primary punt returning duties this season after the injury to Jaylen Waddle against Tennessee.
“I am truly honored to be named the winner of the Paul Hornung Award,” Smith stated. “I take pride in being the most complete and versatile football player I can possibly be, and to have my name mentioned in the same breath as Paul Hornung is truly special.”
Alabama’s leader in all-purpose yards with 1,912 (an average of 159.3 yards per game), Smith lead the nation in receiving yards, touchdown receptions and yards after catch. He also averaged 24.3 yards per punt return with one touchdown. Smith, a senior, was named a consensus First Team All-American.
The Tide are scheduled to play Ohio State in the National Championship on Monday evening.
