Samford University has a new weekly talk show built around first-year head football coach John Grass.

The first episode of “The John Grass Show” was released last week, days after the Bulldogs beat VMI 45-7 for the first win of the Grass era and the 500th in program history.

Molly Robinson, a member of Samford’s football broadcast crew, hosts the show. New episodes will recap each game and preview the next opponent.

Grass was hired last December after eight seasons as head coach at Jacksonville State, where he took the Gamecocks to the 2015 FCS national championship game, and four years on the staff at Clemson.

“It’s been 707 days since Samford had won a game on that field. So some of these guys had never experienced that,” Grass said of the win, which drew 10,033 to Pete Hanna Stadium.

“500 wins for Samford football. That’s a milestone. That’s huge,” Grass said. “And I think about all the teams and the coaches and players that’s come before us to get to 500.”

The episode was recorded ahead of Saturday’s game at UAB, the first meeting between the two Birmingham schools since 1992. Grass said the series needs a name.

“I think Battle of the Vulcan,” Grass said.

He pitched a trophy to go with it.

“Maybe give them a torch. The winner gets a torch, right?” Grass said. “I think this could be a healthy rivalry. Hopefully, do it a yearly tradition and continue to play.”

UAB won Saturday’s game 33-14 at Protective Stadium.

Samford returns to Southern Conference play this Saturday at Chattanooga.
