Alabama Power warns against holiday season phone scams

With the holiday season upon us, Alabama Power has announced that it has seen a jump in the amount of scams its customers are experiencing. According to the company, the holidays are typically a time when scammers’ activities increase.

In this scam, individuals are calling Alabama Power customers and using the customer’s account information to trick them into providing fraudulent payments. The caller usually demands immediate payment via money card and warns service will be canceled if payment is not received.

In response to the scam, Alabama Power has published a few tips on how to discern legitimate bills from false ones. Alabama Power will never:

  • Call you and demand an immediate payment
  • Ask you to use an alternate form of payment, such as a money card
  •  Call you and request bank or credit card information
  • Come to your door and demand an immediate payment

Alabama Power encourages customers unsure if a call is a scam to hang up immediately and contact Customer Service. Business customers can call 1-888-430-5787 on weekdays from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. and residential customers can call 1-800-245-2244 on weekdays from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
