Both Alabama amendments passed with strong margins Tuesday night, as voters approved the expansion of Aniah’s Law and a fix to the pay disparity affecting the state’s elected district attorneys.

Amendment 1 passed with 81.6% of the vote, with 689,688 voting yes and 155,603 voting no. The measure adds solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied building to the list of offenses for which a judge can deny bail.

The expansion closes a gap exposed by the October 2025 mass shooting in downtown Montgomery, where a suspect charged with attempted murder walked free on bond because the charge was not covered under the existing law.

Amendment 2 passed with 57.8% of the vote, with 474,085 voting yes and 346,823 voting no.

The measure allows elected district attorneys to receive statutory pay raises mid-term, matching the standard already applied to judges.

Both Alabama amendments passed the Legislature with near-unanimous support during the 2025 session, with Amendment 1 clearing the House 87-0 and Amendment 2 passing 101-0.
