BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The infamous Alabama abortion clinic where the owner claimed she was doing the Lord’s work is being demolished this week.

Demolition has begun on the New Woman All Women Health (NWAW) Clinic in Birmingham, where two patients were once sent to the hospital in a single day after reportedly enduring “drug overdoses caused by ill-trained clinic staff.”

“(This clinic) was for years the focus of the abortion wars in the South,” said Cheryl Sullenger of the pro-life group Operation Rescue. “The non-descript red brick building in Birmingham once housed the most notorious abortion business in Alabama.”

The Alabama Public Health Department investigated the clinic in 2012 for still performing abortions in spite of losing its license for violating state health laws and standards.

“This facility is operating no differently than facilities operated before Roe vs. Wade,” a local minister said at the time. “They are doing illegal abortions. Not regulated. Not overseen by anyone.”

After their actions resulted in 76-pages worth of health violations, NWAW’s owner Diane Derzis, known simply as “Abortion Queen” in pro-life circles, agreed to close down. Her attempts to obtain a new license through a close friend were repeatedly rejected by the Health Department.

The abortion facility was also bombed in 1998 by Eric Rudolph, who was responsible for the Olympic Park bombing two years earlier, as well as others. Rudolph is now serving a life sentence in prison.

Undeterred, Derzis said she was serving a higher purpose.

“I feel like God wants me to do this job,” she told the Associated Press in 2013. “I thank God every day I had that abortion.”

With the demolition crews destroying the crown jewel of her abortion empire, Derzis may now have to find a new calling.
