On Tuesday, after a D.C. news outlet reported widespread talk on Capitol Hill from U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville that he’s interested in running for Governor of Alabama in 2026, minds quickly turned to the man who has been running for the office for quite some time: Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth.
In a social media post this morning, Ainsworth pretty much said bring it on.
“I’ve been eating my Wheaties and getting into running shape. Looks like the 2026 governor’s race may be shaping up to be one for the history books,” Ainsworth said. “#ReadyToRun”

Punchbowl News reported yesterday that Tuberville has been telling fellow senators and associates a strong interest in running for Governor of Alabama in 2026 instead of seeking reelection to the U.S. Senate.
However, Tuberville said he has not yet talked to President Trump about it yet, which will inform his decision, he says, will be made by May.
Most recently, Ainsworth said in August, “The only position I’d have an interest in running for when my time is up, and I am term-limited, would be governor,” and that his plans would only be formalized after the conclusion of the 2025 state legislative session, which coincides with the official start to 2026 campaign fundraising season.
However, the news from Washington yesterday seems to have kicked Ainsworth into high gear.
