At the rally hosted by the Alabama Republican Party earlier this month, which featured former President Donald Trump, Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth called for President Joe Biden’s impeachment for the handling of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The lieutenant governor followed up with an op-ed that reiterated his call and made a case for impeachment.
During an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show,” Ainsworth acknowledged the serious nature of presidential impeachment.
However, he also said Biden could be guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” as laid out in Section 4 of Article Two of the U.S. Constitution, given the country’s abrupt department gave aide to America’s enemies, and that could be the definition of “treason.”
“I think when you look at impeaching a president, that’s obviously serious charges,” he said. “But I think, you know, what President Biden has done in Afghanistan certainly deserves Congress to look at that and find out if he’s done anything impeachable. In my opinion, he has. If you look at it, you know, just to impeach him — there’s got to be treason, bribery, other high crimes or misdemeanors. I think there are certainly several things there. I mean, ‘other high crimes or misdemeanors’ is pretty broad, but the founders did that on purpose where they can go in and look at people. I think if you also just look at the definition of ‘treason,’ right? Adhering to American enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”
When asked about treason specifically, Ainsworth explained how the precipitous withdrawal from Afghanistan and leaving U.S. military equipment behind led to the arming of American enemies, which he described as “dangerous.”
“That’s a good question,” he replied. “I certainly think when you give — poor plan, yeah but more than that, I think why in the world would you just give all of these potential weapons and not have a plan in place just in case they ever took some of these different areas, put some more troops there just to make sure you protect these assets and the billions of dollars we’ve invested in all the guns, all the Humvees. I think President Trump said it best. If you’re going to go in and do this, there’s a process, right?”
“You get the equipment out,” Ainsworth continued. “You get the people out next. Finally, you take the military that’s protecting everything out. We did the reverse of that. I think the way he did that certainly has armed our enemies. Now whether or not that is treason or not, it is certainly up to each person to make [their mind] up. I’m just talking about the definition that is out there. I certainly think you can say he armed our enemy, and that’s dangerous for America, and it is unfortunate.”
