Zeke Smith announces retirement from Alabama Power

After more than 40 years of service, Zeke Smith is retiring from Alabama Power. His retirement is effective Nov. 1.

For the past 13 years, Smith has been the executive vice president of external affairs, leading the most influential governmental affairs operation across the Southeast. He also serves as chairman of the Alabama Power Foundation’s Board of Directors.

“Zeke’s leadership and relationships have been invaluable to both Alabama Power and the state,” said Alabama Power President and CEO Jeff Peoples. “Those of us who’ve worked alongside him have truly benefited from his expertise and friendship.”

A mainstay on the Yellowhammer News Power & Influence list, it was written this year, “Smith will be talked about by generations of Alabama Power employees, governmental affairs professionals, people in his own community and those in Alabama communities miles from his home.”

“I have known Zeke as a close friend for more than 30 years. He is a person of deep faith, impeccable character and integrity,” State Rep. Danny Garrett (R-Trussville) said. “During my time in the Legislature, I have never heard anyone say anything about Zeke that wasn’t positive.

“He is the same person in Montgomery that he is in Trussville — honest, consistent and trustworthy. For many years, he has been an effective leader in business and economic development in the state. His presence, guidance and influence will be missed.”

Smith’s strength was his knowledge of the state’s business and regulatory climate. His leadership and that of the company aided economic development, fiber connectivity, innovation and technology growth in Alabama.

“Zeke has not only played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s path to success, but has also been an indispensable driving force behind its journey,” said Alabama Senate Pro Tem Greg Reed. “Those fortunate enough to work with Zeke have not only benefited from his extensive expertise but have experienced a genuine friend who is dedicated to improving his home state.

“His dedication and commitment have set a standard for all of us to follow.”

Smith also served as vice president of financial and regulatory planning, vice president of regulatory services, and director of regulatory and pricing.

He serves on the Auburn University Board of Trustees, Samford University Board of Trustees, the Business Council of Alabama Board of Directors, the Alabama Port Authority Board of Directors, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors, the Bryant-Jordan Board of Directors, the Alabama Governor’s Labor-Management Conference Board of Directors, the Auburn Engineering Alumni Council, the McCrary Institute at Auburn University and on the Birmingham Bowl Executive Committee. He is also a 2014 graduate of Leadership Alabama and a member of the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.
