You would think that the Democratic Party would have learned from President Donald Trump’s electoral victory.
Trump won the popular vote, the swing states, most of the districts in the country shifted toward Republicans, and Democrats lost control of the House, Senate, and Presidency. But the Democrats just can’t help themselves.
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) put forward a bill to protect Title IX and women’s sports. According to most polls, the vast majority of Americans believe that biological men shouldn’t play in women’s sports. This was an opportunity for the Democratic Party to prove they aren’t completely controlled by the woke left base, that they’ve learned from the election loss and are changing course, but not a single Democrat could vote for the bill.
The Democrats just can’t help themselves.
Then Trump gives his address to a joint session of Congress. Another opportunity for the Democrats to show that they can rise above the usual partisan heckling.
Instead, many of them tripled down on the heckling. They held up signs, yelled at Trump, and refused to clap for things that should be unifying and uplifting for both sides of the aisle. It got so bad that U.S. Rep. Al Green had to be escorted out of the room for his constant interruptions.
The story of the night was the childish antics by the Democrats, but they just couldn’t help themselves.
Later in the week Green was censured by a majority vote in the House for his disgraceful behavior. It was yet ANOTHER opportunity for Democrats to take the reasonable position. To admit that one of their own members had gone too far.
To show that disagreement shouldn’t break down into chaos. But only 10 Democrats voted in favor of the measure against Green. Even U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) couldn’t bring himself to vote for it, instead voting ‘present.’
The Democrats just can’t help themselves.
This is not just a problem in Washington D.C., but also with the Democrats in Montgomery. The minority party hasn’t had much relevance in the Yellowhammer State since 2010. The further to the left the party goes, the less influence they will have in state politics. And yet the Democratic leadership in Alabama is apparently following the lead of the national party.
Minority Leader Bobby Singleton (D-Greensboro) and others activated a filibuster against a bill on the calendar to reform the board of the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
Singleton raged against Trump and Elon Musk over DOGE, which had nothing to do with the bill being debated. Then Singleton told Republicans, “And if they don’t like it, they can take their ass home.” This is not a serious opposition because the Democrats just can’t help themselves.
Now members of the Alabama House Minority Caucus are proposing sweeping tax reforms financed by repealing the CHOOSE Act and passing comprehensive gaming reform. After all the years it took to get Republicans on board with school choice, do they honestly believe it has any chance of being repealed now?
School choice is also overwhelmingly popular in Alabama right now. Instead of putting forward a package that could get some Republican support, they put forward policies that will go nowhere, all because the Democrats just can’t help themselves.
I’m not usually the one who would give advice to Democrats, but the majority of the American people are not impressed with the “resistance.” They voted for Trump in large part as a rejection to the radical leftist woke agenda that has taken control of the Democratic Party.
If the Democrats in D.C. and Montgomery controlled their behavior and moderated on some of their positions, they might be able to gain back some of the voters they lost to Trump. But I’m not holding my breath that they will change, because the Democrats just can’t help themselves.
