Yaffee op-ed: Doug Jones is not actually running for Governor

A former U.S. Senator and current “candidate” for Alabama Governor is throwing a fit because the Supreme Court sided with the Yellowhammer State when it comes to redistricting.

Alabama scored a major victory at the U.S. Supreme Court when the justices said the Legislature can use the 6-1 GOP leaning congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections.

In response, gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones decided once again to go on social media and play the race card.

“You know, tonight, Alabama has officially joined, rejoined the old Confederacy,” Jones said in a video posted to X. “Officially rejoined the old Confederacy and by God, the Supreme Court not only allowed them to have it, they facilitated it. This is just absolutely outrageous.”

Now I know there was a special session in Montgomery recently, but I’m pretty sure formally seceding from the Union wasn’t a part of the agenda.

“What happened tonight with the Alabama case and getting rid of another voice that represents Alabamians is just an outrage,” Jones continued. “And I am, there’s so many people going to be angry about this. I am angry about it, but the fact of the matter is, I’m going to redouble efforts because we cannot let this happen in America. We cannot let this happen in Alabama. We cannot let this happen in the South.”

Does Jones actually expect this diatribe to help his campaign? Does he actually believe this will win over undecided voters in the state?

Of course not.

The fact of the matter is Jones realizes he has practically no chance of beating U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville in November. The former senator is not actually campaigning to be Alabama’s next Governor. He’s campaigning to be a paid contributor on MSNOW or CNN. He wants to be the guy who panders to leftists in other parts of the country who hate the majority of Alabamians.

“We can start it all right here in Alabama, but it needs to be a nationwide effort as well,” Jones added. “We can do this. They are not going to know what hit them. We are going to come after this seat. We’re going to make sure that we win it. We’re going to get folks out to vote. We’re going to make sure that we pull out of the old Confederacy once and for all.  So, let’s get to work, folks in Alabama. Let’s get to work and just show them. We can be better. We’re going to be better.”

When Jones makes comments like this, he’s not even attempting to reach everyday voters in his state, he wants to virtue signal to Democrats from out of state, and get more likes on social media in the process of course.

The hilarious part is it won’t even work. Jones will not be governor or a major social media influencer.

Alabama lawmakers aren’t redistricting based on race, they’re using a map that helps the majority party, just like Democrat led states have been doing for decades.

For years Democrats like Jones have screamed “racist!” to the courts and it worked, but not any more. The game is over, whether they like it or not.

If Jones was a serious candidate, he would try to reach those in the middle on some of the important political issues of the day. Even if he lost, he could still possibly make inroads in helping the future of the party in Alabama. But he’s not serious. He’s a tool for the radical left, and he’s not a real candidate for the Governor of Alabama.
