Ward endorses DeMarco’s congressional bid

Rep. Paul DeMarco today picked up the endorsement of popular State Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, in his bid for U.S. House in Alabama’s 6th Congressional District.

Ward served two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives before being elected to the Alabama Senate in 2010. His state senate district makes up a big chunk of the 6th Congressional District, positioning him as a trusted voice to many Republicans in parts of Bibb, Chilton, Jefferson and Shelby counties.

“Paul will provide the conservative leadership in Congress that we can trust,” Sen. Ward said in a statement put out by the DeMarco campaign. “Paul shares the same values of limited government and real solutions.”

Ward actually considered running for Congress this year himself. He ultimately opted to run for re-election to the state senate instead, a decision that was heavily influenced by his desire to stay close to home with his wife and 11-year-old daughter. He also sees a pathway to move up on the state level, with Attorney General and Lt. Governor both opening up in 2018.

“There will be other public service opportunities for me and my family but not this year,” Ward said last October. “God has given me a short window of time to spend with a little girl who means more to me than anything in this world. I can’t feel comfortable sacrificing the memories and time away it would require to do the job of US Congressman right for the people of our state.”

Rep. DeMarco released a brief statement welcoming Ward’s support.

“Cam is a good friend and a valued public servant. His support is an honor to me because I know the people trust Cam,” said DeMarco. “I will fight for the people’s rights and values in Congress.”

DeMarco is a two-term state representative locked in a crowded Republican primary to succeed 11-term Congressman Spencer Bachus, who is not running for re-election. The primary is scheduled for June 3rd.
