According to an online poll of USA Today readers, the Shoals’ largest city, Florence, is the best small college town in the country.

Jacksonville, home to Jacksonville State University, was third. Alabama was the only state with two cities in the top 10.

Each town nominated by a panel of experts had to have a population of 50,000 or less and, obviously, be home to a college or university

“These 10 small college towns have fun, youthful vibes, unexpected dining and shopping options, and plenty of cultural offerings,” the newspaper said. “Throw in a beautiful campus and some regional surprises, and you have a recipe for a great vacation.”

From McFarland Park to W.C. Handy’s home, from downtown entertainment to Cypress Creek, Florence has a plethora of attractions.

The publication’s piece on Florence mentioned the University of North Alabama and the rich music history in the area.

“Home of the University of North Alabama, Florence is a small town with a large presence,” USA Today wrote. “Part of the area known as The Shoals — Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Muscle Shoals — music has been central to the area since the 1960s, when legendary studios like FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound began recording some of the world’s biggest hit songs.

“Today, you can find live music every night in The Shoals, and the university’s entertainment program has been a forerunner in educating generations of musicians and industry professionals.”

UNA’s official Facebook page shared the news in a reel Wednesday: “We are thrilled for the country to discover what we’ve known all along.”

The city’s official page said, “From the charm of downtown and the beauty of the riverfront to the vibrant arts scene and the heart of UNA, Florence is where tradition, community, and progress meet.”
