U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville op-ed: Alabama didn’t start redistricting fight – but we’re going to finish it

The Supreme Court just changed the rules on redistricting, and that’s a big deal.

For years, states like Alabama have been told how to draw our own maps by federal courts and outside groups who don’t live here, don’t vote here, and don’t share our values. That’s not how this country is supposed to work.

This week presents us with an opportunity to get this right, and we need to act now and with impunity.

I’m proud of Governor Ivey for stepping up and getting ahead of it.

She didn’t sit around waiting. She didn’t drag her feet. She called a special session and made it clear: Alabama will be ready to act.

If there’s anything I preached coaching ball, it’s this — you don’t wait for the whistle. You get lined up, prepared, and ready so that as soon as you have the opportunity, you move and you move fast!

Right now, Alabama needs to be lined up.

Speaker Ledbetter and our Legislative leadership have a big job in front of them. And they’ve got my full support, but this isn’t just about maps. It’s about results.

Alabama is a conservative state, and we vote that way. We believe in hard work, common sense, and doing things the right way. And when we have leadership in Washington that reflects those values, our state benefits — in real, tangible ways.

We’ve already seen it.

With President Trump in the White House and a Republican Senate majority, Alabama doesn’t just get by — we’re moving forward.

  • Roads and infrastructure projects funded across our state
  • Federal dollars coming back home where they belong
  • Strong support for our military and defense industry
  • Jobs created and industries growing right here in Alabama

The best opportunity to score comes with your offense on the field, and Alabama needs to be aggressive when we have those opportunities.

Right now, we are operating under a map that was drawn by a court, not by the people of Alabama. And that map doesn’t fully reflect who we are or how we vote.

That has consequences. Less influence. Fewer opportunities. Missed chances to bring jobs, funding, and growth back home.

There’s an old saying — we didn’t start this fight, but we can finish it. And that’s where we are today.

Other states have been playing this game for years. They’ve made sure their voices are heard and their priorities are protected. Alabama has every right to do the same — fairly, legally, and in a way that reflects our people.

As your senior United States Senator — and as someone seeking to be your next governor — I’m telling you: we cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.

What we do here matters. It matters for our economy. It matters for our jobs. It matters for the future of our state.

We need to be ready. We need to act. And when the opportunity comes, we need to get the job done.

That’s how you win. And that’s exactly what Alabama is going to do.

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP and Aging Committees. He is also a candidate for Governor of Alabama in 2026.
