U.S. Senate confirms Eddie LaCour to federal bench – Alabama caps 3-for-3 push for confirmations

(U.S. Senate)

On Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Senate confirmed Alabama Solicitor General Edmund “Eddie” LaCour Jr. as a U.S. district judge for the Northern District of Alabama in a party-line 51-47 vote.

LaCour fills the vacancy left by Chief Judge L. Scott Coogler who retired earlier this year.

Today’s vote for LaCour brings home a 3-for-3 slate of confirmations this month by Alabama’s U.S. Senators after former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis and Huntsville attorney Hal Mooty were confirmed to the federal bench in recent days.

LaCour has served as Solicitor General under Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall since 2019.

During his time with Marshall’s office, LaCour litigated the state’s largest appellate fights, including the massive Allen v. Milligan Alabama redistricting case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

LaCour’s confirmation today also closes a half-decade political loop.

He was first nominated to the federal bench in 2020, but was prevented from being confirmed when former U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) used an underhanded procedural tactic as LaCour’s home state senator to block him from ever being considered by the higher chamber.

Today, with political stability restored in Alabama’s senatorial delegation, his longtime boss, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, issued high praise for LaCour.

“Eddie is a brilliant and principled lawyer who brought a deep respect for the Constitution and the rule of law to every aspect of his work,” Marshall said. “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, Alabama, and the nation, will continue to benefit from Eddie’s unwavering integrity and exceptional service.”

“As solicitor general, Eddie left an indelible mark on some of the most consequential legal battles of our time. His unmatched skill and sharp constitutional insight earned him respect at every level of the judiciary, including the U.S. Supreme Court. President Trump could not have made a better choice. We are incredibly proud to see Eddie bring his intellect, humility and dedication to the federal bench,” Marshall said.

Alabama’s U.S. Senators also issued their congratulations after their efforts to ensure LaCour, Lewis and Mooty were successfully prioritized and confirmed by colleagues in the month of October.

“Today, the Senate confirmed Eddie LaCour to fill Alabama’s third federal district court vacancy. Most recently, LaCour served our great state as Solicitor General, representing Alabama in a host of litigation in federal courts,” U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) said.

“He is admitted to practice before every circuit court of appeals in our nation, as well as the Supreme Court where he has filed more than 100 briefs and argued three cases. His legal acumen is unparalleled, and I have every confidence he will serve the Northern District exceptionally. I’m proud to see a fellow native of the Wiregrass serve Alabama and our country on the federal bench. I’m also grateful to have worked side-by-side with Senator Tuberville to see three exceptional nominees confirmed as federal judges and to President Trump for his support.”

“Congratulations to Eddie LaCour on his confirmation.” U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) wrote.

“He has done an excellent job as Alabama’s Solicitor General, and I know he will continue his great work as a federal district court judge.”

Katherine Robertson, a close, longtime colleague of LaCour’s in the Attorney General’s office, said she was “proud” of his confirmation.

With the trifecta of nominations officially confirmed, Alabama’s federal bench is heading into 2026 and long into the future with new horsepower in its Northern and Middle districts.
