In response to a mass shooting that occurred on campus in November 2024, Tuskegee University has announced the completion of several security upgrades aimed at enhancing campus safety and controlling access to university grounds.

According to a statement from the university, new badge-activated entry arms have been installed at three main access points: Brimmer Gate, Lincoln Gate, and Franklin Road Gate. These changes mark a shift in campus policy, as the university is no longer open to the public without proper authorization. Visitors are now required to request temporary passes online and enter through Lincoln Gate.

University President Dr. Mark A. Brown emphasized that the measures are part of a broader effort to ensure student safety.

“Controlling entry access to the campus is just one step in our full plan,” he stated.

With assistance from Alabama Power, lighting improvements have also been made to previously dark areas, including the baseball field, parking lots, and tennis courts. Temporary lighting was installed immediately after the incident, with additional permanent upgrades planned.

Campus Safety reported that the mass shooting took place during an unsanctioned event on campus. The attack resulted in the death of 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson and injuries to 16 others. Authorities arrested Jaquez Myrick, 25, at the scene; he later pleaded guilty to firearm charges. Another suspect, Jeremiah Williams, 20, was charged with possession of a machine gun but denies firing his weapon.

In addition to security upgrades, Tuskegee University has implemented new policies requiring students to wear ID cards at all times and visitors to display their badges visibly throughout their stay. The university also dismissed its former security chief after the shooting and appointed a new head of security to oversee further improvements.
