WHNT in Huntsville reports that a Tuscumbia man already serving time in an Alabama prison now faces additional charges for allegedly soliciting sex and nude photos from a Limestone County Sheriff’s investigator posing as a child. Authorities also say the man offered money for a sexual encounter.
Billy Joe McGaughy, 43, has been in prison since October 1, 2024, serving a two-year sentence for assault out of Colbert County. His earliest possible release date is September 29, 2026. However, new charges could extend his incarceration.
The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office has charged McGaughy with two counts each of attempted human trafficking, electronic solicitation of a child, and sexual extortion.
“The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting our children,” said Limestone County Sheriff Josh McClaughlin. “These actions demonstrate the dangers that exist online, and we will continue to dedicate our resources to identify and prosecute individuals who prey on children. This investigation stresses the importance of parents and guardians being vigilant about their children’s online activities and open communication about internet safety,”
According to investigators, McGaughy initiated contact in September 2024 with an officer posing as a minor. Despite being told the supposed juvenile’s age, McGaughy allegedly solicited sex, requested nude photographs, and offered $1,000 for a sexual encounter.
Authorities claim he later contacted another officer and repeated similar actions, including sending explicit photos, proof of payment, and his phone number. He allegedly made threats of extortion and demanded explicit images from the minors.
Warrants have been obtained for McGaughy’s six new charges, which will be served upon his release from prison.
No bond has been set for McGaughy’s new charges.
