Tuscaloosa’s Moonshot Creamery: On a mission to bring something new to the table

SoulGrown Alabama, Yellowhammer News

Moonshot Creamery, located in the Shops at Riverwalk Place in Tuscaloosa, is a new ice cream parlor and bottle shop that opened in June of 2023. The establishment is owned by Audrey and Paul Vermilyea, who also own Monarch Espresso Bar in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Prior to being Moonshot, the pair opened Domo, an artisanal market in the same location, which closed its doors in April 2023.

The concept comes from the term moonshot, which is defined as a daring goal that challenges conventional thinking. The owners stated that their moonshot is “to open an ice cream shop that defies the status quo.” By looking at their menu and shop interior, it appears that they indeed have. With 20 flavors rotating regularly, customers can expect unique flavors like Brittle & Salt and Caramelized Banana. In addition to fun ice cream flavors, they also offer a variety of toppings such as their house-made strawberry syrup, birthday crumble, and star sprinkles.

“We’re in the business of creating spaces that give people an excuse to pause and simply enjoy something as simple as ice cream, coffee or wine and take delight in the ones they’re sharing it with,” shared Audrey.

“As important as it is to work hard, chase dreams, etc., it’s equally necessary to remember to slow down and Moonshot’s proximity to Tuscaloosa’s Riverwalk makes a leisurely stroll with ice cream in hand an ideal way to spend an afternoon or evening.”

Making the ice cream as natural as possible is a priority for the Vermilyeas. All of their ice cream uses grass-fed milk from Circle J Dairy in Gordo, Alabama. The milk is sold at Moonshot as well as used in the drinks at Monarch Espresso Bar. Moonshot also offers a “wine cave” filled with a diverse selection of natural wines and non-alcoholic beverages. For those with allergies, dairy-free and gluten-free ice cream options and cones are available. A list with all allergens can be found at the front of the store to err on the side of caution.

Up next, Moonshot will be releasing their Christmas in July flavors starting Tuesday, July 18. Customers can try out four new flavors: Cinnamon Chip, Gingersnap Cheesecake, White Chocolate Peppermint, and Dark Chocolate Peppermint while supplies last.

Moonshot Creamery is located at 1650 Jack Warner Parkway. They are open Tuesday-Thursday from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. For more information, visit their Instagram (@moonshotcreamery) or website.
