4 DAYS REMAINING IN THE 2024 ALABAMA LEGISLATIVE SESSION

Tuberville on 2022 U.S. Senate race: ‘I’m not endorsing anybody’

Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) appeared at a Washington, D.C. function and was photographed alongside 2022 Alabama U.S. Senate Republican hopeful Katie Britt with his arm around her.

The photo was leaked out and picked up by several media outlets, leading some to speculate Alabama’s junior U.S. Senator was backing Britt’s candidacy.

Tuberville immediately came out and dismissed the interaction as an endorsement.

During an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on Tuesday, Tuberville said not to expect him to endorse any of the candidates running for U.S. Senate.

“I think we’ve got some good candidates,” he said. “You know, I’ve been to some functions with pretty much of all them except for Mike Durant. He just recently got in, but he did come up. We spent about a hour talking. I really like Mike. I think he is a good guy. He is a good American. He was in the military. Obviously, he’s got a great story about the Black Hawk down. He built a business, built it from scratch, and wants to give back. Katie Britt — I showed up at function, and I tell all of them, ‘I’ll take a picture with you. Put it on the internet. It doesn’t make any difference.'”

“But I’m not backing any of them,” Tuberville continued. “I want the people of Alabama to listen, to look, to read about, to watch what’s going on. Don’t pay attention to these ads. It’s who do you want representing you because this is a very important race. We need the right person to come up that’s got the values of the people of Alabama — rural, urban, of all races, everybody. Pick the right person, and we’ve got plenty of time to do it, but I’m not advocating anybody. We’ve got some very good people in the race.”

“And again, I’ll be seen with all of them from now until the primary because I go out, and a lot of those people there supported me,” he added. “I just hope we get the right one. I’m not endorsing anybody because, as I told them, ‘Hey, I don’t remember anybody endorsing me.’ I had to go out there and do it on my own. I think that is the best way to do it, and it should be done that way.”
