Rainbow City businessman and former State Rep. Mack Butler on Tuesday announced his candidacy to seek the Republican nomination for the Alabama House of Representatives, District 28.
Butler formerly served House District 30 in the state legislature from 2012 until 2018, when he opted to seek election to the Alabama Senate, District 10. His candidacy would prove unsuccessful as he was defeated by Republican primary opponent State Sen. Andrew Jones (R-Centre).
Prior to his election to the lower chamber, Butler served 10 years on the Etowah County Board of Education.
Butler was elected as a Republican National Convention delegate for the campaigns of Donald Trump during the 2016 and 2020 presidential primary elections. He is a member of the Alabama Republican Party state executive committee and former chairman of the Etowah County GOP executive committee.
According to a release, Butler’s decision launch to his candidacy was due to “the huge growth of government and taxes” in recent years. The campaign took note of his conservative voting record in the legislature on issues relating to abortion, taxation, religious liberty and the Second Amendment.
In announcing his candidacy, Butler indicated that as state representative, he would combat governmental overreach in defense of individual rights.
“The state legislature is our absolute last line of defense against over-reach from both the state and federal government,” declared Butler. “We must have a legislator who will fight for our rights.”
Butler suggested that the legislature would benefit from the service of individuals who held previous private sector experience.
He concluded, “We need business people in our legislature who know how to create jobs and handle a balance sheet. The more money government takes from its people, the more it gives to special interests.”
House District 28 is presently occupied by State Rep. Gil Isbell (R-Gadsden) and encompasses Etowah County. The primary election is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2022.
