An Alabama Marine who answered the call to serve after 9/11 and later turned personal hardship into a mission to help others is being recognized by U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) as the state’s April “Veteran of the Month.”

Tuberville announced the honor in a video highlighting U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Andy McDuffie of Dothan, pointing to his service and continued work supporting fellow veterans.

In remarks accompanying the recognition, Tuberville reflected on McDuffie’s decision to enlist following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“The days following 9/11 were a scary time for our country and world. Yet even in those dangerous times, many brave young men and women ran toward danger—instead of away from it. That’s true for U.S. Marine Corporal Andy McDuffie of Dothan. Andy was a junior in high school when the Twin Towers fell. He felt it was his duty to join the Marines to defend our country and deployed to the Middle East shortly after his high school graduation in 2003.”

Tuberville noted McDuffie’s passion for teamwork, both on the football field and in uniform, where he served as a squad leader providing security for Navy explosive ordnance disposal units — commonly known as bomb squads.

After medically retiring from the Marine Corps, McDuffie returned home and graduated from Troy University. As he recovered from his injuries, he also worked through survivor’s guilt and ultimately dedicated his life to helping other veterans in Alabama’s Wiregrass region.

“Andy is a shining example of turning tragedy into purpose. It’s my honor to recognize him as the April ‘Veteran of the Month.’”

Tuberville’s office continues to accept nominations for the “Veteran of the Month” series, which recognizes Alabama veterans who have made meaningful contributions in their communities.
