Tuberville bill would ‘protect female athletes’

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is fighting back against President Biden’s attempt to change Title IX rules that he believes will harm women’s sports in American schools.

The Biden administration released rules this week that would expand the meaning of sexual discrimination in schools. The change would effectively prevent any college or school that receives federal funding from categorically banning transgender students from playing on sports teams consistent with their gender identity.

“The U.S. Department of Education proposes to amend its regulations implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX),” wrote the Education Department, “to set out a standard that would govern a recipient’s adoption or application of sex-related criteria that would limit or deny a student’s eligibility to participate on a male or female athletic team consistent with their gender identity.”

In response to the move, Tuberville is reintroducing his “Protecting of Women and Girls in Sports Act.”

“We must protect girls and women’s sports and the opportunities they provide,” Tuberville said. “The legislation pushes back against the far left’s attempt to destroy Title IX and protects the female athletes of all ages from inappropriate, unfair and dangerous competition. My bill requires institutions to separate athletics based on biological sex, and stops federal funding from going to any program or institution that allows males in women’s sports or vice versa.”

The senator and former Auburn football head coach said Congress has a responsibility to act on this issue.

“Our leaders, especially our representatives in Congress do not have the right to say they support women if they stand by and do nothing as their opportunities are stripped away,” Tuberville said.
