Sen. Tuberville doubles down on push to kill the filibuster before Democrats do

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is once again calling to end the filibuster, a drum he has been beating for the better part of a year, this time backing fellow U.S. Senator Rick Scott’s push Monday to clear the way for voting integrity legislation before the November midterms.

Tuberville reshared Scott’s message on Monday, adding his own warning about Democrats’ intentions if they retake the chamber.

“Sen. Rick Scott is spot on,” Tuberville wrote. “We already know Democrats will nuke the filibuster and pass their INSANE agenda the MOMENT they retake the Senate. Let’s get rid of the filibuster now and finally DELIVER for the American people before it is too late.”

Scott’s original post argued the procedural rule had been weaponized beyond its original intent. “The filibuster was NEVER meant to be a permanent veto on the American people,” Scott wrote.

“Radical Democrats have used it to stop nominations and BLOCK America-first legislation. It’s time to stop the madness and BLOW UP the filibuster so we can deliver on the American people’s mandate.”

The filibuster currently requires 60 votes to advance most legislation in the Senate. Republicans hold 53 seats, meaning they would need near-unanimous support from their own caucus to clear that threshold without Democratic votes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has said there are not enough votes to eliminate the rule, with at least a dozen Republican senators firmly opposed.

Tuberville has made ending the filibuster a consistent cause this year, centering his push on the SAVE America Act, a voting integrity bill that would require photo identification to vote and proof of citizenship to register.
