ANNISTON, Ala. — The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) is coming under fire this week after it was discovered the blue-clad agents who pat down air travelers missed 95 percent of weapons in recent testing by the Department of Homeland Security, leaving many Americans wondering if there’s a better way to ensure their safety while flying. One Alabama company may hold the answer.

AMK9, which partners with the Auburn University veterinary school, has developed a method of training dogs to be able to sniff out threats, even in crowded areas.

“Vapor Wake® detection is the most effective and efficient detector dog capability available in the marketplace,” says AMK9’s website. “These highly-skilled Vapor Wake® Detection dogs are rigorously reared and screened for high performance output, and qualified to meet the extremely challenging demands of this new level of highly mobile detection capability. The canines are ‘always on;’ trained to constantly sample the vapor or particles from a human’s wake and once detected, proactively track the scent ‘wake’ back to its source.

A scientifically-proven technology, Vapor Wake®, is highly effective and uniquely suited for screening wide area, high pedestrian traffic scenarios and choke-point entry access, allowing for normal movement without interruption.”

Two Vapor Wake® detection dogs are now on duty at Ohatchee High School in Calhoun County, the first high school in the country to use the specially-trained canines. Detection dogs are already in use across the country at sporting events, public gatherings, and other large-scale events.
