Trump holds Mar-a-Lago meeting with U.S. Senate hopeful Mike Durant

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Durant recently met with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., his campaign confirmed with Yellowhammer News on Wednesday.

While noting that the two met on Monday, the Durant campaign would not comment further on the specifics of the meeting.

The meeting confirmation comes on the heels of Trump releasing a statement announcing that he had rescinded his endorsement of U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) Wednesday morning. The former president pointed to polling which showed that Brooks’ support among Republican voters had taken a significant downturn.

A series of recently-conducted polls show that Durant has ascended to the top of the three-candidate GOP primary field, with former Business Council of Alabama CEO Katie Britt polling as a close second.

Now that Durant has met with Trump, all top-tier Republican candidates in the race have received face time with the former president as Britt met with him in early February.

In pulling his endorsement of Brooks, Trump conveyed discontent with the congressman by claiming that he had gone “woke” and inadequately focused on the results of Trump’s election defeat. Seizing upon the opportunity was the Durant campaign, which signaled its willingness to adopt strong rhetoric regarding the issue of election integrity and the 2020 presidential election.

This past weekend, the U.S. Army veteran stated that he was “proud to be the only America First candidate and carry the banner for President Trump.”

“President Trump was ROBBED by the corrupt Democrats who changed the rules and then refused to investigate valid instances of fraud, and then was shockingly betrayed by do-nothing career politicians who refused to investigate,” proclaimed Durant.

He added, “Election integrity and the results of the 2020 election are the highest priority issues across the country right now… We need strong Republicans who will fight on this issue, not weak-kneed Republicans who will waffle like Mo Brooks. We won’t move on and we won’t forget!”

Trump on Wednesday morning stated his intentions to announce his new pick for Alabama’s next U.S. Senator “in the near future.”
