Trump admin touts support for Alabama amid pandemic — ‘Strong State-Federal partnership’

The Trump administration released this week a summary of the support it has given to the state of Alabama amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, including millions of masks and thousands of doses of remdesivir.

The newly collected data prompted praise from U.S. Reps. Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope) and Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville).

In the document, the Trump administration praises “the strong State-Federal partnership with Governor Kay Ivey” as a successful element of the coronavirus response.

The meat of the federal help for Alabama has come in two areas: personal protective equipment and federal funding.

According to the administration, the federal government has shipped Alabama 1.3 million N95 masks, 2.6 million surgical masks, 120,000 face shields, 660,000 surgical gowns and 750,000 medical gloves.

Remdesivir, the drug that has proven to be most effective at treating hospitalized coronavirus patients, has been in short supply since its effectiveness at treating COVID-19 was discovered.

The Trump administration says it “coordinated donation” of the 15,520 vials of the drug that Alabama has received.

“President Trump and his administration have provided unprecedented assistance to Alabama to help us overcome the COVID-19 pandemic,” wrote Byrne’s official government Twitter account.

The administration also pointed out that Alabama’s state government received $1.9 billion in CARES Act funding, and $6.2 billion in loans have been spread across over 70,000 small businesses in the state.

Around 2.4 million Alabamians qualified for the $1,200 stimulus payments the federal government sent out in April, for a total of $4.1 billion injected into the Yellowhammer State’s economy.

The full list of support pushed by the administration can be accessed here.

“Thank you to Donald Trump for supporting Alabama’s coronavirus response!,” commented Brooks on Thursday.
