Coming off an embarrassing defeat on the road in week one against a Florida State team which won just two games last season, the Alabama Crimson Tide is reeling this week.
Alabama did not just get beaten, it was downright bullied and pushed around by a team which clearly wanted it more than they did.
They showed an effort on the defensive side of the ball which was simply just sad.
Loafing around the field, not making tackles, being bamboozled by a mobile quarterback, and so much more combined for what was a complete drubbing and worse than any loss of year one under Kalen DeBoer.
Sure, the chance exists that this Seminoles team — which is almost entirely different from last year given portal turnover — is actually a solid group, but DeBoer lost his grace with the fanbase after the bad losses from year one.
This was supposed to be one of the best defenses in the nation under Kane Wommack, and Ty Simpson was supposed to be able to run the electric brand of offense DeBoer became known for at Washington.
Simpson was far from the biggest issue as the defense looked like Swiss cheese and both the offensive and defensive trenches got pushed around, but he was not great either. The veteran quarterback looked nervous in his first start, making some head scratching decisions at times and bailing from several clean pockets.
There were however things to be pleased with in the Simpson debut and things to build off moving forward. Clearly though, the overall effort from the team was not anywhere close to good enough on Saturday, so where do they go from here?
In the upcoming week, a chance to at least somewhat get things together and stop the bleeding presents itself with Louisiana-Monroe coming to town for the home opener, but it’s safe to say that DeBoer is under more pressure moving forward than he has faced at any point in his coaching career.
Two weeks from now, Wisconsin comes to Tuscaloosa for another non-conference game, which, on paper should be a relatively easy victory.
After that, it’s a bye week before hitting the road once again, this time to Athens and facing the Georgia Bulldogs in their building for the first time in a decade.
There’s a ton of season left and the expanded playoff minimizes the consequences of regular season losses, however DeBoer is going to have to get the train back on the tracks quickly. The Tide is far from the toughest part of their gauntlet of a schedule, and they are starting here in a major hole.
From fans, the hot seat talk has already started.
In terms of administration, it’s unlikely things are close to that point yet, but clearly this is not the way this team needed to start and things need to turn around before legitimate conversation starts to be had.
Alabama did not think it would find itself in this spot just 14 games into the DeBoer era. But here they are, and what they do next could wind up defining it.
