The Mid-Century Modern Gem in Central Alabama

Unique homes are harder to come by these days, as newer houses are being produced at an exponential rate to fulfill the needs of new homebuyers—many with similar, conventional layouts and floor plans. But in Central Alabama, there are some architectural gems to be found, such as 1042 Shades Crest Road.

In the heart of Bluff Park, the mid-century modern home is certainly eye-catching with its unique and bold architectural features. Large windows, minimalist design, and clean lines are all quintessential components of the mid-century modern look. The home’s unique features and classic design appealed to owner and REALTORⓇ Andrew Hancock when he purchased the house in 2018.

“The home’s architectural style is really special and distinctive,” says Hancock. “And the story of the house is special. I bought the house from the original owner and designer, Marilyn Sheffield, who was an architect in the 1960s when there weren’t many female architects.”

Sheffield also designed the two houses on either side 1042 Shades Crest Road; all three are uniquely different, yet with Sheffield’s signature mid-century style.

Built in 1968, 1042 Shades Crest Road has undergone extensive renovations while preserving its original architectural charm. The home features an open floor plan with a large kitchen and dining area along with a stunning concrete-topped kitchen island. Additionally, the spacious eating area, stone countertops, and breakfast bar offer plenty of room to gather and entertain.

The home is comprised of five bedrooms and three bathrooms, all with corresponding sleek lines and wooden panels. Hancock notes that in many mid-century homes with their minimalist features, storage becomes an obstacle—something he took into consideration when remodeling.

“With three children, we needed to add storage to make the home more functional,” Hancock says. “We worked with Strout Architecture to design custom cabinetry throughout the entire living room and master bedroom.” Today, the house has an abundance of hidden storage and wardrobe-style closets that add functionality without compromising design.

But perhaps the crown jewel of the home is its expansive windows, a classic mid-century component, which overlook Shades Crest. “Nearly the entire back of the house is glass, so there’s lots of natural light and great views,” says Hancock. The indoor and outdoor spaces are also connected by two large decks, perfect for grilling and relaxing with friends and family.

Hancock acknowledges that the home has provided a unique haven for his family, and hopes its next owner will appreciate its rare and exceptional beauty. “It’s been a wonderful house for us, with lots of great memories that were made here,” he says. “Being a REALTORⓇ, at times all of the homes look the same, and it’s hard to get excited about a property—but this one is truly special.”
