The Auburn Corner: Tigers have a completely new look QB room in just one week

Every Tuesday we present “The Auburn Corner,” where we’ll get into a different topic on the Auburn Tigers, break down the previous game, preview the upcoming game, and everything in between.

The Auburn Tigers were heading into the offseason with big changes on the horizon, especially in the quarterback room after two largely unsuccessful season on offense under Hugh Freeze.

Now with Payton Thorne out of eligibility and moving on, there was always going to be a new starter next season. What may not have been expected was that none of the quarterbacks in next years’ room would be hold-overs — but that’s the way things have played out. With Thorne out of eligibility along with Hank Brown, and Holden Geriner surprising no one by entering the portal, that was all expected.

But freshman former four-star Walker White shook things up when he entered the portal as well, making it so that the room will have all new faces next season.

Freeze locked down who is expected to be his quarterback next season in former Oklahoma five-star recruit Jackson Arnold. As one of the most highly touted high school players in the nation in his class, things didn’t work out for Arnold in Norman and he enters the portal still with three years of eligibility remaining. If Freeze and his staff can tap into the potential that made him so highly regarded in high school, Arnold could be the Tigers starter for the next two seasons.

Outside of Arnold, five-star incoming freshman Deuce Knight will likely be battling for the backup job with now former Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels. Daniels was crystal balled to Auburn before Arnold signed, but still signed on even after signing Arnold.

The possibility exists of the Tigers adding a third quarterback from the portal as well if Freeze desires to carry four in the room.

Of course, change does not guarantee success, but after a wildly poor year from the quarterback room as a whole, starting over completely fresh is probably a sound strategy.
