Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall was recently awarded the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) Distinguished Service Award at the company’s 2024 Power Supply Conference in Orange Beach.
“We are most appreciative of General Marshall’s tireless efforts to fight for Alabama consumers regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s overreaching regulations which will severely impact the electric utility industry and the consumers we serve,” said Fred Clark, AMEA President & CEO.
Marshall was one of the speakers during the conference and provided attendees with an update regarding environmental litigation, for which he is an engaged participant on behalf of Alabama.

As part of his push against the EPA, in August of 2023, Marshall joined 20 other state attorney generals in a letter expressing their fervent opposition to the agency’s rule targeting coal, natural gas, and oil-fired power plants. The group said at the time that the the EPA is unlawfully leveraging a specific clause in the Clean Air Act to force dozens of plants to close early.

Marshall vowed to protect Alabama’s economy from insidious overreach from agencies like the EPA at the state level.
“As the last line of defense, I will continue to combat these out-of-control agencies who set illegal standards that will lead to devastating economic consequences for our great state,” Marshall said.
The AMEA is a joint action agency located in Montgomery and is the wholesale power provider for 11 public power utilities in Alabama, which serves approximately 350,000 customers in Alexander City, Dothan, Fairhope, Foley, LaFayette, Lanett, Luverne, Opelika, Piedmont, Sylacauga, and Tuskegee.
