State Sen. Elliott: New I-10 Mobile River Bridge ‘could get better’ — ‘I am still arguing for increased state investment in it’

Another key figure weighed in on a new I-10 Mobile Bay and River proposal unveiled last week unanimously approved by the Mobile and Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).

State Sen. Chris Elliott (R-Daphne) spoke favorably of the MPOs’ efforts during an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show” on Friday, given where a failed Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) proposal was two years before.

He said he would like to see more buy-in from the state on the project.

“[I] think it could get better,” he said. “I am still arguing for increased state investment in it. But we’re going to see really with those parameters for the next couple of months what ALDOT’s able to do and what ALDOT’s able to design. And that’s where this is probably going to get interesting, four to six months from now. And I think with elections, six months from now until we see what’s possible with these parameters.”

Elliott said Gov. Kay Ivey and ALDOT director John Cooper were on board with this proposal and applauded them for coming back with a revised plan after the Mobile and Eastern Shore MPOs rejected the last one.

“I think they are very much in support of moving this project forward,” Elliott added. “I will give this governor credit — she comes out with a plan, everybody looks at it and says, ‘That’s horrible.’ Then they come back with something different, and it’s better than what the original thing was. That was true with prisons. It is true with this as well. But I also give them credit for working with folks and coming up with a solution.”
