State Rep. Sorrell casts all 50 of Alabama’s delegates to officially renominate Donald Trump for president

State Representative Andrew Sorrell (R-Muscle Shoals) on Monday cast all of the state’s 50 delegates to officially renominate President Donald Trump as the GOP’s candidate for president in 2020.

The official nomination of Trump was a procedural matter — the president has enormous support among Republican voters and faced only token challengers in the primary elections — but until the actions taken on Monday, his renomination was only presumptive.

Sorrell noted that Alabama is “the state with the highest approval rating in the country for Donald Trump,” to open his remarks about the nomination.

Vicki Drummond, the longtime GOP National Committeewoman from Alabama, kicked off the nomination process in her current additional role as the secretary of the Republican National Committee.

Sorrell is the chair of Alabama’s delegation to the Republican National Convention. Only six members of the Alabama GOP were allowed to attend the convention in person due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The state representative also noted Alabama was home to “Trump-endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville, who we plan to send to Washington.”

Sorrell said that Tuberville will “take back the Senate seat from our caretaker Democratic senator” Doug Jones.

“This state strongly supports our president and his policies,” remarked the freshman representative.

“Alabama’s motto is ‘We Dare Defend Our Rights.’ This president has defended our borders, defended our religious liberty, cut our taxes and repealed the Obamacare individual mandate,” he asserted.

Trump officially received the renomination later in the morning and appeared virtually to thank his supporters in Charlotte, NC, where the in-person portion of the convention is being held.

The GOP convention is ongoing and can be streamed here.

Sorrell concluded his remarks by saying, “Alabama has unanimously cast its 50 delegates’ votes for President Donald J. Trump.”

Trump will appear in some form on each of the four nights on the convention this week. He will face Democratic nominee Joe Biden at the ballot box in November.
