SSAB to invest $74 million in expansion of Alabama steel plant

SSAB plans to invest approximately $74 million to expand its heat treatment capacity at its steel production facility in Mobile County, the company announced on Friday.

The project will include construction of a new building and installation of a state-of-the-art tempering furnace at the SSAB plant in Axis. Company officials said the expansion will increase production of high-strength steel brands such as Hardox and Strenx and improve shipping capacity.

“SSAB’s investment represents a major advancement for our region’s industrial capabilities. By expanding production of high-strength, specialized steel, SSAB is reinforcing Mobile County’s role in driving innovation and supplying critical materials to key sectors across North and South America,” said Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne.

“We are proud to see global leaders like SSAB continuing to choose Mobile for their growth and innovation.”

The Swedish-based steelmaker expects the investment to create 12 new jobs and strengthen its ability to serve customers in North and South America.

The project is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed by early 2027.

This investment will create new opportunities for our workers, strengthen our local economy, and reinforce Mobile County’s leadership in advanced steel production. We are proud to see major investments like this in the northern part of the county,” said Mobile County Commission President Merceria Ludgood.

“This expansion will bolster our capacity to produce high-strength steel and increase SSAB Alabama’s truck shipping capacity,” said Andy Bramstedt, general manager of SSAB Alabama.

“We are excited about the opportunities it will bring to our facility and the community.”
