Shomari Figures defends $1.5 million home in Washington, D.C. during debate

Alabama’s Second Congressional District candidates faced off again during a debate on Fox 10 News Thursday evening as the latest poll shows a tightening race. A new poll was released Thursday showing District 2 Democratic nominee Shomari Figures leading by 4.6 points ahead of Republican nominee Caroleene Dobson.

During the debate, the issue of Figures’ house came up again as Dobson tries to portray the Democratic candidate as out of touch with the average voter.

“When it comes to the ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs’ Act, I am fully supportive of making those permanent to ensure that our small businesses have consistency and that they are able to expand and grow and thrive,” Dobson said. “We have never had more tax revenue. We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem, and that’s because we have too many on the far left and Washington DC insiders like my opponent with his million and a half dollar house funding Washington, instead of balancing the budget.”

Figures responded the jab by implying the Dobson is being hypocritical on the issue.

“I’m blown away by the fact that a $1.5 million house that we work very hard for is impressive to someone who spent over $2 million of their own money running in this campaign,” Figures said. “When it comes to tax policy, when it comes to what we would do with this particular issue, you have to assess it. You have to assess it, not through a partisan lens, but through a practical lens, you have to look at the fact that there were provisions in that tax policy that benefited businesses, that businesses were able to take advantage of, especially during COVID.”

The issue first came up during the previous debate when Figures was fact checked for falsely calling Dobson a “billionaire.”
