Shomari Figures defeated Rhett Marques Tuesday in Alabama’s closely watched 2nd Congressional District election, keeping the seat in Democratic control.

According to unofficial election-night results from the Associated Press results with 91% of votes counted, Figures received 53.8% of the vote compared to 46.2% for Marques. Marques conceded Tuesday night.

The contest pitted first-term U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) against State Rep. Rhett Marques (R-Enterprise), following another redrawing of Alabama’s congressional boundaries.

Figures first won election to Congress in 2024 under a court-ordered map that gave Alabama a second district where Black voters had an opportunity to elect their preferred candidate.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the state to return to its Legislature-approved 2023 map, creating a more Republican-leaning district covering portions of Montgomery and the Wiregrass.

Marques, a small business owner who has served in the Alabama House since 2018, secured the Republican nomination in an August special primary. His campaign received endorsements from President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Katie Britt.

Figures, who took office in January 2025, sought reelection after his district’s boundaries were changed.

Figures will represent Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District in the next Congress, beginning in January 2027.
