Shelby continues as longest-serving member of Senate Banking committee in U.S. history

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) has confirmed the full list of his committee assignments for the 117th Congress, which he has announced will be his final in Washington, D.C.

Shelby’s committee assignments remain unchanged from the previous Congress, albeit with Republicans now in the Senate minority.

As Yellowhammer News reported Friday, Shelby continues his unprecedented leadership for Alabama on the Committee on Appropriations.

He also remains as a senior member of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. This continues his record of service as the longest-serving senator in history on this committee, of which he was previously the chairman on two separate occasions.

Shelby is also a former chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration; he remains a senior member of that committee for the 117th Congress.

Finally, Shelby serves on the Committee on Environment and Public Works.

“My committee assignments for the next Congress will bolster my work on behalf of the state of Alabama and the nation,” said Shelby in a statement. “It is an honor to continue to lead my Republican colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee. Chairman Leahy and I have a long-standing relationship built on trust and fairness, and I look forward to continuing our work to fund our national priorities in a bipartisan manner. Furthermore, my position on the defense appropriations subcommittee will enable my continued efforts to strengthen the security of our nation.”

“I also look forward to my work on Banking, Environment and Public Works, and Rules to advance legislation that will improve the lives of all Americans,” he concluded.
