Samford University unveils plans for Creekside District-West in Homewood

Samford University has announced plans to redevelop a 27-acre site along Lakeshore Parkway in Homewood into a dynamic mixed-use development known as Creekside District-West. The initiative is part of the university’s broader vision to create a vibrant, community-focused space that integrates residential, commercial, and recreational facilities, benefiting not only Samford students and faculty but also the wider Homewood community.

The Current Site and Proposed Features

According to ABC33/40, Creekside District-West will cover 27 acres of largely undeveloped land that currently generates minimal tax revenue for the city. The development will introduce a variety of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, including:

  • Residential Spaces: The plan includes 435 Samford-affiliated residential units, providing housing options for students, faculty, and staff while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding community.
  • Commercial Facilities: A mix of lifestyle retail shops, dining establishments, and entertainment venues will be available, enhancing the area’s vibrancy.
  • Office and Conference Spaces: The project includes commercial office spaces, as well as hospitality and conferencing facilities designed to accommodate university and business events.
  • Health and Wellness Amenities: Creekside District-West will feature spaces dedicated to health and wellness, supporting both university affiliates and local residents.
  • Academic and Support Services: The development will house academic and support service facilities, further integrating Samford’s educational mission with the broader Homewood community.
  • Hotel Accommodations: Plans include a hotel with approximately 140 to 150 rooms, catering to visiting scholars, prospective students, families, and business travelers.
  • Green Spaces and Parking: At the heart of the development will be The Green, a large central gathering area designed as a pedestrian-friendly space with art installations and pathways. The site will also include open spaces and structured parking to accommodate residents and visitors.

Part of Samford Horizons Master Plan

Creekside District-West is a key component of Samford Horizons, a visionary development plan launched in 2023. The broader initiative aims to ensure that Samford University remains one of the world’s most respected Christ-centered institutions while also strengthening its role as a community pillar in Homewood for generations to come.

Community Engagement and Feedback

Samford University has emphasized its commitment to community involvement in the planning and development process. The university and developer Landmark Services Co. have actively engaged with local residents, businesses, and city officials to gather input and ensure the development aligns with the community’s needs. Public meetings are being held to provide opportunities for residents to voice their opinions and contribute to shaping the final design, helping ensure the project reflects the values and priorities of both Samford University and the city of Homewood.

Architectural Design Focused on Community Connection

Leading the design of Creekside District-West is Page, a full-service architecture, engineering, and design firm based in Denver, Colorado. Page’s approach blends urban and natural landscapes to create spaces that resonate with the community. The design integrates pedestrian-friendly walkways, green areas, and open spaces, ensuring a harmonious connection between the university, the development, and the surrounding Homewood area.

With its blend of residential, commercial, and green spaces, Creekside District-West will become a focal point in Homewood, bringing students, faculty, residents, and visitors together in a dynamic and connected community.
