A major construction milestone has been reached on the Saban Center in Tuscaloosa, a new STEM and arts campus planned for the city’s River District.

Project leaders marked the building’s “topping out,” signaling that structural work is nearing completion as construction continues toward a projected 2027 opening, with Stone Building Company leading the project.

The 118,000-square-foot facility is being developed through a partnership that includes the Nick’s Kids Foundation, the City of Tuscaloosa, and the State of Alabama. Plans for the site include the State of Alabama STEM Hub, along with space for arts and educational programming.

The project also incorporates Alabama-sourced materials, including locally recycled marble and other regionally sourced components.

“Saban Center is deeply personal to us—we’ve been involved every step of the way, working closely with the design team to shape a place where children of all ages can explore their curiosity and imagine what’s possible for their futures,” said Nick and Terry Saban. “We’re thrilled to see this vision materializing in the heart of Tuscaloosa and can’t wait to see the next generation of Alabama’s leaders, makers, and dreamers make it their own.”

According to project details, the campus will include STEM labs, exhibits, and workforce development resources aimed at students and educators across the state.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said the project is expected to play a role in workforce development.

“Saban Center will be a catalyst for building Alabama’s future-ready workforce,” Maddox said. “Through this extraordinary partnership with the State of Alabama, Nick and Terry Saban, and many dedicated organizations, we are creating pathways that equip students and educators with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in tomorrow’s economy.”

Governor Kay Ivey said the center will expand access to educational opportunities across the state.

“Saban Center reflects Alabama’s commitment to expanding access to innovative educational experiences for students and educators across our state,” Ivey said. “By bringing STEM education and the arts together on one dynamic campus, this project will help prepare the next generation of leaders and problem-solvers. We are deeply proud to lead this project alongside the Sabans, and we cannot wait to watch this space come to life.”

The facility will also house local organizations including the Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre and IGNITE, formerly known as the Children’s Hands-On Museum.

Construction is ongoing as the project moves toward completion later this decade.
