Two famous Alabamians have recorded public service announcements about how to deal with the coronavirus.
Comedian Roy Wood, Jr. and boxer Deontay Wilder partnered with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to record brief informational messages.
Both men expressed a desire for Alabamians to stay home if possible, wash their hands thoroughly, and stay six feet apart from others in public.
Wood is from Birmingham, having moved there at a young age, and is something of a champion for his city. He shot a television pilot for Comedy Central in Birmingham, and makes being from Alabama a part of his stage persona when doing stand-up comedy.
Wood displayed his characteristic humor when he told Alabamians to “treat everyone in your life … like an LSU fan” as a reference point for social distancing.
“We can beat COVID-19 if we work hard and take the steps now so we can kick it later,” he stated.
Wilder, a 34-year-old from Tuscaloosa, has amassed a 41-1-1 record during his boxing career and held the World Boxing Council’s heavyweight title for five years.
Wilder said that Alabama has a superb team of medical professionals that are working to “knock coronavirus out,” and emphasized the importance of everyone doing their part to prevent the spread.
