Roby: Gowdy a ‘perfect fit’ to lead Benghazi investigation

Rep. Martha Roby, R-Montgomery, told Yellowhammer News today that she believes Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, is the perfect person to lead the House select committee’s investigation into the Benghazi terrorist attack that took place on Sept. 11, 2012.

“Trey is a perfect fit to lead this select committee,” Roby said. “He’s a tough prosecutor, but also fair and judicious. I spoke to Trey today and I can tell you he understands how important it is to keep politics out of this investigation and dedicate all the energy toward searching for truth on behalf of the American people.”

Gowdy was tapped by House Leadership to lead the panel on Monday. A day later he was already receiving death threats.

But even though Gowdy is largely unknown to most Americans, those who have been paying close attention to the heated debate surrounding the Obama Administration’s reaction to the Benghazi attack say that Gowdy won’t be backing down.

The video below, which was shot during a press conference last year, is perhaps the best example of why Gowdy was House leadership’s choice.

Rep. Roby led a House Armed Service Subcommittee investigation into the Benghazi attacks earlier this year.

One of the key findings of the Armed Services investigation was that up and down the chain of command, everyone was clear from the beginning that it was a terrorist attack, rather than a spontaneous reaction to a YouTube video, as the Obama Administration asserted. According to the committee’s report, no military personnel ever thought or communicated that what happened was anything other than a terrorist attack — from troops on the ground that night to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

That has led many people to question the White House’s motives for advancing the narrative about the video.

Roby said she believes the newly appointed select committee’s broad jurisdiction will give them the ability to uncover exactly what happened.

“Our jurisdiction in the Armed Services investigation was limited to the military’s preparedness before and response to the Benghazi attack,” Roby said. “There are many more layers to the Benghazi story, including our intelligence community, the state department, and of course the White House. A select committee with broad jurisdiction can hopefully connect these dots and provide a clearer picture.”
