Returning U.S. Space Command headquarters to Alabama among top priorities, Sen. Tuberville says

Last week, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville affirmed his commitment to returning the headquarters of U.S. Space Command to its rightful location in the Rocket City, particularly following President-Elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

“One of my top priorities will be advocating for U.S. Space Command to be returned to its rightful home in Huntsville, Alabama,” said Tuberville (R-Auburn). “We’ve been talking about this for years. It’s been nearly four years since Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville was selected as the home of Space Command, winning out over more than 60 other locations around the country.”

“Redstone was chosen because of Huntsville’s world-class facilities, education, workforce, and quality of life. Two independent studies have confirmed that Spacecom belongs in the Rocket City. Joe Biden ignored the studies and the process, moving Spacecom to Colorado for purely political reasons over the reference of his own Secretary of the Air Force.”

The journey of U.S. Space Command’s relocation to Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal began in 2021 when the Trump administration conducted a thorough and competitive selection process to determine the best location for this critical military command. Huntsville emerged as the clear winner, beating out over 60 other locations across the nation. However, that victory was short-lived.

In 2023, President Joe Biden overturned the basing decision, and instead, redirected it to Colorado Springs. Tuberville and Alabama’s entire federal delegation blasted the move as illegal and politically-motivated.

Today, Sen. Tuberville reports confidence that with Donald Trump once again leading the country — the right call will finally be made.

“Now we know that Huntsville is the best option, and President Trump knows this also,” Tuberville said. “As Alabama’s voice on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I look forward to advocating for Spacecom to be returned to its rightful home in the Rocket City in the very near future.”

In a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the matter, Tuberville also offered information regarding Redstone Arsenal’s vital role in space operations over the past sixty years.

“Alabama and Redstone Arsenal are ready for Space Command, but many people in this room probably don’t understand Redstone. NASA’s only facility on a military base is the Marshall Space Flight Center,” said Tuberville. “The largest consumer of space products is the US Army and Army Missile Command and has been at Redstone Arsenal since it was established in 1962.”

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to reverse the controversial decision with an executive order in the opening days of his second term in office.
