Voters in Fayette, Lamar, and Walker Counties, as well as portions of Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties, went to the polls on Tuesday to select the next Senator for District 5.
Republican State Representative Matt Woods faced Democratic nominee Ryan Cagle in the special election made necessary by the departure of former Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed, who resigned to join Governor Kay Ivey’s cabinet as her Senior Advisor on Workforce Transformation.
The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) reported the unofficial results as follows:
· Matt Woods (R): 7,707 votes, 86.00% · Ryan Cagle (D): 1,238 votes, 13.81% · Write-ins: 17 votes, 0.19%
Based on the preliminary results, Woods has won the Special General Election and will serve as the next State Senator for District 5.
Alabama Republican Party Communications Director Jeannie Burniston released the following statement on Woods’ win:
“Congratulations to Senator-elect Matt Woods on tonight’s victory. During his time in the House of Representatives, Matt has been a consistent fighter for conservative values and protecting Alabama families. From championing the REACH Act, which gives adults another pathway to earn a high school diploma, to passing the Alabama Child Protection Act, which criminalizes the use of AI to generate child pornography, Matt Woods has proven he’s serious about getting results. We’re excited to see his continued leadership and impact in the Alabama Senate.”
