Report: Mercedes expanding in Alabama, creating over 370 new jobs

A report Monday from the Tuscaloosa News says that Mercedes-Benz is again expanding its presence in Alabama, this time in the form of a 500,000 square foot facility that will employ 373 workers.

The new plant will be part of Mercedes’ push to manufacture more electric vehicles over the upcoming decade.

According to Tuscaloosa News, the expansion will “serve as a storage and sequence facility” in the service of Mercedes building up its electric vehicle manufacturing capacity.

Danielle Winningham, the executive director of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority (TCIDA), told the paper that her organization “is grateful for [Mercedes’] continued investment and community partnership.”

The new facility will be in the Tuscaloosa County portion of Vance, behind the Truck and Wheel company’s location off Will Walker Road. Mercedes is investing $53.6 million in its construction.

Mercedes plans to have 10 different electric-powered vehicles for sale by 2022. As part of that effort, the corporation is building an enormous battery plant in Tuscaloosa County and making significant improvements at its facilities in nearby Bibb County.

The battery plant, Bibb County infrastructure and the expansion reported Monday are part of a $1 billion investment that Mercedes is making in Alabama, where it currently employs around 3,700 individuals.
