Rep. Aderholt elevates Alabama voter integrity efforts as urgency to pass SAVE Act

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) spoke from the floor of Congress to say that recent actions taken by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen reveals why Congress should pass laws to make it harder for illegal immigrants to register to vote.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson failed to get a funding package through Wednesday that would have included the SAVE Act if it passed. Aderholt voted in favor of the bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote.

Aderholt spoke on the floor of the House in support of the bill, pointing to current cases in Alabama that prove the need for the legislation.

“The rhetoric that surrounds this bill is that it fixes a problem that does not exist,” Aderholt said. “Well my answer is simple. Come to Alabama’s Fourth Congressional District where just last week an illegal immigrant pleaded guilty to identity theft and voter fraud after it was discovered that she illegally voted in at least four U.S. elections.”

A 42-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala living in Alabama was charged earlier this month by the U.S. Department of Justice for illegally assuming a U.S. citizen’s identity and using it to vote in multiple elections.

Aderholt praised recent efforts by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, who announced the removal of thousands of potential illegal immigrants from the state’s voter rolls.

“And just last month, our Secretary of State from the state of Alabama, Wes Allen, found at least 3,000 non-citizens who were registered to vote in the state of Alabama and removed them from the voting rolls. Mr. Speaker, these people should have never been allowed to register in the first place.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that Democrats will not support any funding bill that includes the SAVE Act policy riders.
