Republican State Representative Randy Davis, R-Daphne, says he will not run for the congressional seat left vacant by U.S. Republican Jo Bonner of Mobile.
Davis announced that he will seek re-election for his current seat in the Alabama Legislature representing Baldwin and Mobile counties.
Rep. Davis was elected to the Alabama Legislature in 2002 and says he wants to continue his work helping the economy in south Alabama grow.
“The location of the Airbus assembly plant in Mobile will bring a great deal of growth, jobs and opportunity to Alabama’s Gulf Coast region,” Rep. Davis said in a statement.
Davis went on to say that he decided to end his congressional run after prayer and consideration, and with help from his family and friends.
“I deeply appreciate the widespread support and commitments our congressional effort has received across the district over the past several weeks, but we are firm in our decision to bring the campaign to an end,” he said in conclusion.
Rep. Davis is the chairman on the House Constitution, Campaigns and Elections committee. He also holds seats on the Agriculture and Forestry and Internal Affairs committees.
Rep. Bonner announced in May his decision to leave Congress to accept a position with the University of Alabama system.
Bonner’s last day in office is Friday, August 2, 2013.
