PMI U.S. to support GivingTuesday in Alabama and honor veterans nationwide

Philip Morris International’s U.S. affiliates, including Swedish Match (PMI U.S.), have announced their GivingTuesday Community Leadership initiative to support the communities where they operate, with a special focus on the Wiregrass region in Alabama. As part of its philanthropic commitments, the company will also honor military veterans and foster small business development. PMI U.S. is also extending its generosity to five other communities across the nation.

As a Giving Tuesday Community Leader, PMI U.S. will work with organizations like Wiregrass United Way in Dothan, Alabama, to uplift the community. This partnership includes matching up to $200,000 in funds raised across six locations nationwide. Wiregrass United Way is dedicated to driving healthier, safer, and sustainable change through community-based projects in Alabama.

Located in Dothan, the Wiregrass United Way plays a critical role in the Alabama community by funding transformative projects addressing education, healthcare, and housing needs. PMI U.S.’s partnership will amplify these efforts during Giving Tuesday, encouraging residents and organizations in the state to give generously for local impact.

PMI W.S. is also partnering with :

  • The Daniel Pitino Shelter in Owensboro, Ky., works to break the cycle of homelessness by providing emergency shelter and transitional or permanent housing through a collaborative, community-centered approach.
  • CARITAS in Richmond, Va., cultivates a community of hope and healing for those experiencing homelessness or suffering from addiction.
  • Women’s Business Development Council in Stamford, Conn., enables small business development with a focus on supporting women on their entrepreneurial journeys.
  • N-Street Village in Washington, D.C., empowers women experiencing homelessness through housing, healthcare, and job assistance.
  • The Hope Station in Wilson, N.C., supports families in crisis by providing food, housing, and emergency financial assistance.

Additionally, to honor veterans, the companies are partnering with Wreaths Across America to distribute wreaths respecting our nation’s fallen soldiers at more than 4,600 locations. Employees nationwide, including those in Alabama, can dedicate a wreath free of charge this holiday season. On December 14, PMI U.S. employees will join communities nationwide in wreath-laying ceremonies to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by service members.

As part of its commitment to supporting women’s economic empowerment, PMI U.S. will complete the first installment of its previously announced five-year, $5 million commitment to the Connecticut Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC) this month. This organization has been helping women entrepreneurs launch and grow small businesses since 1997. While this specific commitment focuses on Connecticut’s WBDC, Alabama businesses and nonprofits will benefit from PMI’s broader initiatives to foster economic growth and opportunity.

PMI U.S.’s efforts in Alabama are part of a broader strategy to invest in the communities where its employees live and work. “At PMI, giving isn’t just a moment—it’s a movement,” said J.B. Simko, who leads corporate social responsibility at PMI U.S. “By the end of 2024, we will have proudly contributed nearly $35 million in the United States to organizations aligned with our philanthropic goals to support well-being in communities where we live and work.”

These contributions build on investments PMI U.S. already has made this year, including a commitment to the veteran community nationwide focused on:

  • Recruitment outreach to make military veterans and their partners aware of employment opportunities.
  • Sponsoring national organizations dedicated to improving the lives of veterans and their families, including the Bob Woodward Foundation and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.
  • Partnering with multiple veterans clinics at law schools to help veterans access critical benefits through free legal services.
  • Supporting community-based veteran-focused events, initiatives, and organizations.
  • Bringing together veterans, their advocates, academics, and policymakers to identify unmet needs and work together on solutions.

With initiatives focused on veterans, women’s empowerment, and hyperlocal giving, PMI U.S. continues to demonstrate its commitment to communities in Alabama and across the nation.
