Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey on Tuesday endorsed former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell in the Republican runoff for Alabama attorney general, asking those who voted for her in the May 19 primary to do the same.
Casey, who finished third with roughly 25% of the vote, released both a formal endorsement statement and an open letter to Alabama voters explaining her decision. Mitchell will face longtime general counsel to current Attorney General Steve Marhsall, Katherine Robertson, in the June 16 runoff. Robertson finished first in the primary with about 41%. Mitchell finished second with 34%.
“I entered this race because I believe experience, integrity, and service matter more than political insiders or massive outside spending. I still believe that today,” Casey said.
“For those reasons, I am proud to support Jay Mitchell for Attorney General, and I respectfully ask those who supported me to join me in supporting him in the runoff.”
“At the end of the day, I believe Alabama deserves an Attorney General who has actual courtroom and legal experience.
Jay Mitchell has been in the courtroom. He understands the law, the judicial system, and the serious responsibility that comes with serving as our state’s top law enforcement officer.”
According to a joint release today, the announcement unites “two of Alabama’s most respected courtroom lawyers against inexperience, establishment politics, and out-of-state dark money.”
“I am deeply concerned about the role dark money and outside interests played in this race,” Casey wrote. “Alabamians deserve transparency and accountability from those seeking public office.”
The Republican primary drew heavy spending from both in-state and national sources. Mitchell’s campaign has repeatedly criticized Robertson over out-of-state donations during the race.
Casey also addressed the IVF-related political advertising that ran during the primary, sharing her family’s own experience with infertility.
“Like thousands of Alabama families, my family faced the difficult reality of infertility, and IVF was not a political talking point for us,” she said. “It was personal. It was emotional. It was part of our journey to build our family. Alabama families who have experienced infertility deserve compassion and understanding, not political exploitation.”
Mitchell, who resigned from the Alabama Supreme Court in May 2025 to run for attorney general, welcomed the endorsement in a statement of his own.
“Pam Casey is an outstanding prosecutor and has shown herself to be a fierce, fair competitor throughout this race,” Mitchell said. “She believes — as I do — that the AG’s Office should not be for sale. It was a privilege to share the campaign trail with Pam and her family, and it’s my distinct honor to carry her endorsement into this runoff.”
